ACTING President Moses Nagamootoo on Sunday heaped praise on the Foster brothers when the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) held its 27th annual awards ceremony at St Francis Community Developers Hall, Portuguese Quarters, Corentyne, Berbice.

Representing President David Granger who is out of the jurisdiction, the prime minister said the duo are good examples of agents of change.

“From what was done by the club and the Foster brothers, they have by example shown us we can change the image of our country, we can change the image of our society and inject rather than negatives, we can inject positives; we can inject confidence and we can inject that amount of encouragement to our young people, our future, so that they can move forward and they can be supported … that there are always those in our society who are prepared and can lift them up.”

Over $3M in prizes was awarded to club members, police officers and teachers for their outstanding work in their respective fields, as well as corporate sponsors for their continued support for the club.

“I want to thank the Foster family and the Rose Hall Town Youth and
Sports Club for this wonderful demonstration today of bringing various parts of our county today under one roof to give thanks and appreciation to the efforts that have been made to uplift standards and performance,” Mr. Nagamootoo added.

He said due to the policies of the Government, the current and future generations are more fortunate than their predecessors.

In addition to the Constitution that guarantees protection and education of youths, Government has developed a National Youth Policy that looks at the overall development of young people.

Mr. Nagamootoo encouraged the RHTYSC to engage youths under their charge to make them aware of their roles, rights and what the future holds for them.

He was awarded the Dolphin Award of Excellence, the highest award of the club for being a positive role model and outstanding friend of the club.

Fifteen others were recipients of this award, including Social Protection Minister Amna Ally.

Club Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hilbert Foster, praised the sponsors of the event and appealed to Government to look into the sordid state of affairs of cricket in Berbice.

He said everyone has a responsibility to ensure cricket is preserved for future generations.

According to Mr. Foster, cricket in the region is on a downward spiral, because it is managed by persons who lust for power, lack insight and are not duly elected to office.

Some 76 awards were distributed to various players and individuals.

The Cricketer of the Year award went to Clinton Pestano, who recently represented Guyana against the Leeward Islands in the Regional Four-day tournament.

The event was graced by the presence of other notable personalities, including Director of Sport, Christopher Jones; Regional Chairman David Armogan and ‘B’ Division Police Commander Ian Amsterdam.
