JOHNATHAN Fagundes and Llewellyn Gardner were first to cross the line in the open and senior categories respectively at this year’s Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association-organised Trevor Rose Memorial 5km run on Sunday.
Trevor Rose is the former president of the GABA, who on January 26, 2014, was shot dead. Rose was 32 years old at the time of his death and was an award-winning fashion designer, known especially for his captivating costumes during Guyana’s Mashramani celebrations.
Fagundes clocked 23 minutes, 44 seconds to finish ahead of Seon Burry (26.30 seconds) and Calvin Thomas (26.32 seconds) to win the open category.
Gardner ran 28.55 seconds, beating out Jardine Joseph (29.26 seconds) and Alexi Prashad (31.15 seconds).
Beyoncé Bepeazer was the youngest female to cross the line while nine-year-old Justin Prize was the youngest male.
Pacesetters’ Nathan Saul (29.03 seconds) was the first basketball player to make it across the finish line while Stephen Peters (38.25 seconds) was second.
Trevor Rose Jr and the former fashion designer’s mother were on hand to help in the presentation of prizes.
Ansa McAl under their Mackeson and Lucozade brands, along with Banks DIH, Trophy Stall, Pulse Entertainment, Beepats and ‘A’ Division Commander Clifton Hicken were the sponsors of the event.
Adrian Hooper, GABA president, thanked the participants for helping to make this year’s event, the third of its kind, a success, while adding that next year the association plans to make the Trevor Rose Memorial 5km even bigger.
