SOME 4,685 persons have been charged for speeding and another 882 drivers booked for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) as of April 5, acting Traffic Chief, Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan,said.
He also noted that thus far in the year, some 26 fatal accidents have been recorded compared to 32 last year.
Statistical data in relation to applications for hire car licences for the year up to April 5 revealed that 491 persons applied,while for the same period 302 persons were charged for operating a private motor vehicle as a hire car without licence.
‘Operation Safeway’, a joint effort of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, and the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) is still in effect.
This campaign aims at bringing an end to road accidents as well as to ensure that motorists adhere to the traffic laws.
Under ‘Operation Safeway’, traffic ranks have been conducting rigid exercises throughout the country, but more especially in Georgetown and on the East Bank and East Coast Demerara.
There will also be an increase in traffic patrols, both day and night, re-introduction of spotting exercises, increase in the deployment of ranks in accident hot spots, frequent use of radar guns to target speeding drivers and random breathalyser testing, Superintendent Ramlakhan said.
