THE life of a 20-year-old man was snuffed out by an alleged drunk driver at around 20:30hrs on Sunday evening when a car collided with his motor cycle in Springlands,Corentyne.
Dead is Irshad Mahmood, a welder. He had just rode off from his recently-engaged fiancée,who was in the vicinity of Sukhpaul’s Gas Station,to meet up a friend and was returning to her when a gold coloured Toyota Fielder Wagon bearing licence plate PNN 7736 attempted to turn into the Gas Station and collided with Mahmood.
The impact sent him flying several feet in the air and he landed on the pavement,resulting in internal and head injuries.He was picked up and rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver of the car fled the scene but was arrested Monday morning by ranks who recognised him as a passenger in another car.
Mahmood’s fiancée, Reshma Ramdatt, 18, who witnessed the accident said,“We were sitting by the gas station and he see a friend who call he so he leff he helmet and ride off because was not far. When he come back he almost reach me and a car look like it did coming in the gas station turn and hit he and pitch he in the air. He fall down and start fuh bleed through he nose and ears. We hustle pick he up and put he in a car fuh carry he to the hospital and when we reach them tell we he dead”

The young lady recalled amidst sobs that as soon as the accident occurred the driver of the car fled the scene without looking back in the direction of Mahmood. She further related that they were only engaged a few weeks ago and were planning to tie the knot on 30th April 2017.
Meanwhile, Mahmood’s mother, Violet Khanai is calling on the police to ensure justice is served for her son, whom she described as caring and always willing. “I want the police to make sure we get justice fuh me son, the driver knock he down and getaway, he nah even stop and see if he okay or try fuh take he to the hospital;he knock he down like a dog and getaway.” Guyana Chronicle understands that the driver told investigators when he was arrested that he was on his way to turn himself in at the Springlands police station. He is currently in custody assisting with investigations.
