WORLD junior silver medallist Kadecia Baird clinched an IAAF World Championships qualifying time in the women’s 200m last weekend when she competed for her college Texas A & M at the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
Finishing in 23.03 seconds, the US-based Baird slides in just under the 23.10-seconds qualifying time for World Championships. However, that time was not enough for her to place in the race where she finished sixth overall.
Churning in an even more impressive performance was Baird’s teammate, and Guyana national record holder, Brenessa Thompson, who finished second overall in the race with a wind-assisted time of 22.59 seconds.
However a +2.7 wind robbed Thompson’s time of any validation as an IAAF qualifying time. The 20-year-old, who holds the 22.99 seconds record, will still have a lot of opportunities as the season continues, as will Baird.
“This weekend was really great for me despite having a wind on my back. It’s still the beginning of the season and I have enough time to qualify,” Thompson told Chronicle Sport.
