SMART City Solutions (SCS) in terminating the services of its 60 traffic wardens on Wednesday, allegedly told the workers that if they failed to sign their termination letters, they will not be paid outstanding monies owed to them.

One of the employees, who spoke to this newspaper on condition of anonymity on Thursday, repeatedly asked for his name not to be mentioned as SCS reminded the workers of the confidentiality clauses in their contracts.

The employee said the company constantly warned them about speaking to the media and divulging any sort of information.

The Chronicle had often tried to have conversations with SCS employees on the streets, but was always greeted with hostility and a refusal to answer even the most basic questions.

According to the employee, every employee who was terminated was forced to sign for the letter or would not have been paid the $28,000 each .

Furthermore, the employees had to return all SCS equipment including notepads, coats, belts, and badges.

“The way they handle we wasn’t nice at all. They made us feel offended,” the sacked employee related.

He further surmised that if the company were indeed intent on hiring them back in the future if the need arose, they would not have been handed termination letters, but one that said the service was suspended.

The employee related how the company originally offered to pay the wardens $100,000 monthly but after training, they changed the sum to a little over $60,000. After the workers complained, SCS then went up to $90,000 which had to be taxed.

This particular worker is severely affected by his loss of employment as he explained that he has several children and his wife to look after. He had left a job for the one offered by SCS.
