PARENTS and relatives of pupils in Bath Settlement Village, West Coast Berbice and its environs, recently participated in a Mathematics sensitisation outreach, aimed at helping them to understand the importance of the subject.

The exercise which was held at the Market Square at Bath, was organised by the Regional Education Department of Region Five.

Regional Education Officer (Primary Education) Sherry Grant-White, said that it was the first of a series of such public/parent sensitisation programmes being undertaken within the context of the Emergency Mathematics Intervention Programme (EMIP) launched by the Education Ministry late last year.

The EMIP targets Grades Five and Six students preparing for the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) examinations with the aim of improving students’ performances in Mathematics at this year’s examinations.

Students’ performance in Mathematics countrywide is far from flattering.

Staffers at the Region Five outreach set up a booth displaying various teaching/learning materials that parents and relatives of Six Graders can make and use to encourage children to develop competence and love for Mathematics.
