‘Piggy’ on trial for rape, robbery of nurses

A 12-MEMBER jury was empaneled on Wednesday before Justice Navindra Singh in the Georgetown High Court for the rape/robbery committed on three nurses on September 11, 2008, in the county of Demerara.

The accused vented loudly, in the prisoner’s holding area at the High Court, his feelings about the lengthy time he has been on remand awaiting trial. Carlos Wesley Payne called “Piggy” was unrepresented by counsel for the indictment of rape of a nurse and robbery committed on three nurses on September 11, 2008. The matter was held in-camera and the State was represented by Siand Dhurjon and Tuanna Hardy.

The particulars of the case stated that in the wee hours of September 11, 2008, Payne raped a registered nurse who was on duty and robbed two others at the Upper Demerara Hospital at Blue Berry Hill, Wismar. It is alleged that Payne snuck into the hospital and forced his way into the section where the nurses were housed. There he raped a nurse and relieved two others of their valuables including, cell phones and jewels.

According to the allegation, after he executed the unlawful act, he took the nurses and placed them to lie at the back of the hospital after which he fled the scene. He was however, arrested a few days later and charged. The trial continues where several witnesses will be called to take the stand in-camera before Justice Singh.
