Pedal cyclist dies in accident

A 62-year-old pedal cyclist struck down on Dennis Street, Sophia on Sunday afternoon, was moments later pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Dead is Balwant Ramdin, a father of five and former security guard attached to the HBTV Channel Nine.The errant driver of the minibus BRR 5374 was charged and appeared in the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday and was placed on $500,000 bail.
Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination revealed that Ramdin, who was struck down from behind by the speeding minibus, suffered a broken neck and head injuries.
The accident reportedly happened sometime after 16:00hrs as Ramdin was riding out of Sophia to visit one of his sisters living on East Coast Demerara.
Police who visited the scene of the accident confirmed that the driver of the minibus BRR 5374 was indeed driving at a fast rate. Witnesses said the minibus ploughed into the pedal cyclist, bringing him down, but the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and it failed to come to an immediate stop.
The body of Balwant Ramdin will be cremated at the Ruimzeigt Cremation Site, West Bank Demerara (tomorrow) Saturday February 25, 2017.
