…had swerved from hitting woman

EARLIER in the night, Roopesh Ramotar swerved from hitting a woman in front of a popular rum shop on the La Grange Public Road, West Bank Demerara; however later Thursday night, Ramotar died in front the very shop, after he was struck down by a speeding car.

The vehicle which crashed into Ramotar is in police custody at the La Grange Police Station

At the time of the accident at approximately 22:40hrs, the 42-year-old man of Lot 12 Public Road, Houston, East Bank Demerara, had just exited his car – PMM 8153 – when he was struck down by PTT 755; the driver of this car sped away after the accident, but was later apprehended after a public spirited citizen drove after him. The alleged speeding driver has been identified as a 54-year-old man, who remains in police custody at the Wales Police Station. Police did a breathalyzer test and found the driver to be above the legal alcohol limit.
Ramotar, a father of three, was a coconut vendor who operated in the vicinity of Main Street, Georgetown. Police, who were summoned to the scene, took the man’s body to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival and later transferred to the Ezekiel Funeral Parlor.

Reports indicate that Ramotar, who was having a few beers at the rum shop, decided to drop home his friend on the West Bank Demerara, and while returning to the shop he swerved from a lady who had crossed the street recklessly.
“This man swerved from the lady and decided to park in front of the rum shop and he come

out his car and put his head down into his arms bracing onto his car giving a sign of relief of not hitting her, when another speeding vehicle passed and crash into this man pitching him several feet away into a nearby utility pole,” one eyewitness told the Guyana Chronicle.

According to the eyewitness, two drivers who saw what occurred, jumped into their vehicle and followed the alleged speeding driver to his home. The police were then called and the vehicle was seized and taken to the La Grange Police Station. The alleged speeding driver was later arrested and police assisted with taking Ramotar’s body to the hospital.
“The driver of the red car who hit that man had to be drunk,” another eyewitness said.
Relatives at Ramotar’s home said they received the news of his death through a nurse attached to the West Demerara Regional Hospital. His youngest child is eight months old and the eldest 19-years-old. He was described as a friendly and peaceful person.
