A DIFFERENTLY-ABLE man was killed by a truck as it was attempting to reverse on the Bush Lot Public Road, Berbice Tuesday morning.

Ganpat Ganpat 36, called “Jadoo” and “Paul” of Lot 298 Bush Lot Village, East Berbice, Corentyne, lost his life shortly after he was run over by the Guyana Beverage Inc. truck.

According to reports at around 08:00h the truck stopped and parked on the western side of the road to deliver goods to a grocery shop in the opposite direction. The father of Ganpat, Ganpat Chunoo explained that his son would usually leave home and be on the parapet in front of the Chikree’s residence. There he would solicit help from passersby and would sometime ask persons to purchase items for him from the shop in the opposite lane since he does not cross the road.

At the time of the accident, Chunoo, 76 in tears said his son was on the parapet when he was struck. Sister of Ganpat, Yopattie Ganpat explained someone broke the news to her about the accident. She expressed disgust at the fact that it was one hour after her brother was hit that he was picked up and taken to the hospital. “It’s sad because he couldn’t talk or say what was hurting him; he didn’t deserve to die like that and more so punish and die so the driver of the truck didn’t even come out to try help him; it was after so long then he get help.”

She related that her brother was born with the disability. He was dumb and would never trouble anyone, she related. In tears, the woman said the family never approved of him leaving home to solicit help but it was a “hobby” of him since he couldn’t walk or talk. She is calling on the police to conduct a thorough investigation, even as she demands justice for her brother. “The driver should at least help him or try to take him to the hospital fast; imagine one hour after then them pick he up.”

Another relative said he visited the mortuary and tire marks were visible on Ganpat’s right side shoulder and upper body. He reportedly sustained severe internal injuries. He leaves to mourn his father and four siblings. Meanwhile, the driver of the truck is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the truck is impounded at the Whim Police Station.
