A 33-year-old Cuban National was on Monday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for trafficking a woman for sexual exploitation at his Bollywood Club located in Providence, East Bank Demerara.

Eladio Peraza denied the charged that between March 1, 2016 and January 20, 2017 at his Bollywood Club he engaged in trafficking in person whereby he recruited, transported and harboured a female Cuban national for the purpose of sexual exploitation.

His lawyer, Mark Conway in his application for reasonable bail, explained to the court that his client has been residing in Guyana for the past two years and got married to a Guyanese national seven months ago.

Conway further explained that Spanish visitors would often stay at his client’s club because Peraza spoke their language and the visitors felt comfortable.

“Given my client financial and family ties in Guyana, Peraza does not pose as a flight risk,” the lawyer said in his application for bail.

However, Police prosecutor Inspector Neville Jeffers strongly opposed bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence and the fact that the defendant is a foreign national.

The prosecutor informed the court that the victim is currently in protective custody. The Chief Magistrate denied bail and remanded Peraza until January 25, 2017 when he will return before her for the commencement of trial.

The woman was rescued last Friday when by the Counter- Trafficking in Persons (C-TIP) Unit of the Ministry of Social Protection when they raided the Bollywood Club.
