A FAMILY of four lost their home on Friday night after their wooden house, located at the squatting area of ‘B’ Field, Sophia, went up in flames.
Residing there were Alicia — only name given — and her three children. Speaking to the Guyana Chronicle, the grieving mother said that she was not at home when the fire occurred; she was at her stall in the Stabroek Market along with her three children.
While the cause of the fire remains unknown, Alicia disclosed that she suspects it was caused by her ex-lover. She also claimed that the fire began from “in the middle of the house” and said the backdoor was left opened; her ex-lover has a spare key,she said. The fire started sometime around 19:00hrs

She highlighted that she and her ex-lover have been having domestic problems for some time now and she decided to “move-away” and “squat in Sophia.” She moved to this location in , 2016.
Alicia said too, “He [her ex-lover] asked to come and stay with me for a lil while… until he could make some money and get back on his feet.” However, Alicia noted that their domestic problems continued and she “put him out on Christmas Day.”

A family friend, who identified herself as Shavon, said that the fire service responded promptly, but the entire interior of the house was lost to the fire. Alicia mentioned that a number of electrical appliances and furniture were lost, including a brand new flat screen television bought as a late Christmas present for the children.
Alicia lamented, “I have nothing now… I am staying by a friend, but I have nothing.” The mother of three is pleading for any assistance.
