City Council obtains judgment against several businesses

THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has obtained judgment against several commercial property owners, and in 2017, the Council would be implementing an aggressive debt collection drive and amnesty will not be offered. This is according to Public Relations Officer, Debra Lewis, who noted that the defaulters should settle their debt.

“We thank those property owners who honour their civic obligations and those who made use of the facility. The Council looks forward to providing vital municipal services to local communities,” she said.

For the year 2016, the Council had gained judgment against several commercial property owners, including the proprietors of Ashmin’s Store, Guyana Fisheries, Jaikarran and Sons, Shoppers Paradise, and the building which accommodated the Milk Plant in Kingston.

The M&CC said it will pursue these and other properties owners to recover the large outstanding sums owed, and next year, the Council would be implementing an aggressive debt collection drive and amnesty will not be offered.

Amnesty offered and interest rates will expire on December 31, 2016.

“Yet, some property owners have not utilised this facility offered to citizens. The Council is not likely to offer this facility in 2017. Rather, the Council would be implementing an aggressive debt collection drive. This will include initiating and following up on legal proceedings against defaulters and effecting Summary Jurisdiction (Petty debt laws) Parate Execution and Distrait laws as articulated in the Municipal and District Council Act sections 219 &220,” the M&CC said.

It also noted that the response of the business community has been less than favourable during the five week period.

Some 85 per cent of the monies collected came from residential property owners.

Recently, Town Clerk Royston King had written the Head of the Private Sector Commission seeking the support of that body to the Council’s effort to collect property rates owed by businesses.
