A taxi driver blatantly escaped police custody in the wee hours of Monday morning after he allegedly robbed a passenger of her valuables.

According to the young lady, who requested anonymity, at approximately 1:30hrs Monday morning, she left an event in the company of friends at Everest Ground Carifesta Ave, Georgetown and flagged down the taxi – HC 2302.

According to her, a friend was dropped home first and she decided to help the friend inside, and left her phone and other belongings in the taxi, which was waiting.

“When my other friends and I turned around to go back in the taxi, we realized he fled with my stuff including my iPhone and my handbag with my belongings such as money, ID etc,” she said.

The young lady further said that she managed to track down the vehicle using the GPS on her iPhone and contacted the police for assistance.

“I tracked him down using my iPhone and got the police to accompany me to confront him. After 2 hours of trying to catch up to him, I finally caught him at Stabroek market parked in the taxi area. I approached him and asked if he had just picked up me and my friends to which he admitted, I then asked for my belongings and he pretended to not know what I was talking about but eventually reached over into the passenger side floor and picked up my phone,” she disclosed.

When she asked for the remainder of her things, he lied.

“When I asked for my bag however, he claimed he didn’t know I left it and a passenger he just dropped off might have gone with it. I called him out on his bull!@#$ and kept asking for my bag but he kept denying it. I asked why he left with my things after we asked him to wait, to which he lied saying one of my friends paid him and told him to leave. This was untrue since I was the last person to leave the car and no one ever turned back,” she explained.

The young lady said she is disappointed in the action of the police, who could have arrested him on the spot, however the ranks asked him to drive to the police station, but the taxi man fled.

“The police that accompanied me told him to go to the station and that he was getting locked up. They attempted to drive behind him but of course he got away…I also think the police should’ve searched his car and arrested him there since it was obvious he stole my belongings. He had already began to charge my phone! But they didn’t even ride with him to the station, they foolishly gave him the opportunity to get away,” the young lady noted.

  1. that rank should be displined////and suspended for STUPIDITY/////////////
Is paul willams still in charge of police training. sometimes, i opined, he should be RE-TRAINED

  2. Really??? That’s your headline “Taxi driver escape police custody…” After what I am assuming you have done your research, you missed the key part when the police FAIL to do their job and the very basics to add. You headline should be “Lack of training cause taxi driver to escape or incompetence of the Police force in carrying out their duty” Lets discuss.
