CLARENCE Carter, the Linden man who allegedly killed his wife and stabbed her daughter on

Dead: Leolyn Sullivan

January 18, 2016, has objected to his caution statement being tendered into evidence.

Carter told Magistrate Clive Nurse on Tuesday at the Linden Magistrate’s Court that the caution statement shown to him is not the one that was written in his presence. The one showed to him in court was written on sheets of paper while he claims that the one written in his presence was done in a diary.

Clarence objected after evidence was given by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Inspector, Chabinaught Singh, who under sworn testimony, told the Court that he followed all protocols in collecting statements. He said he wrote the evidence after Carter indicated to him that he prefers for it to be written and that he does not wish for any relative to be present while orally giving the statement.

Singh also told the Court that the next day he visited Carter at the Mackenzie lock ups and showed him a knife to which Cater had responded, “That is the knife I stab Leolyn and stab Shemeka with.”

The unrepresented defendant however refuted these claims, alleging that he was forced to give the statement and that he was denied his requests of having a relative be present while he gives his statement.

“Your honour, on the said day I was critically ill, I had a lot of stab wounds and I was forced by Inspector Singh to give a caution statement. I was also denied my requests to have a family member who was present at the station to be there while I give my statement,” Carter claimed.

He dismissed the evidence given by Inspector Singh that he was shown the murder weapon.

Given the revelation, Magistrate Nurse decided that the statement will not be taken into evidence but will be tendered for future identification. Clarence remains on remand as his trial continues.

It is alleged that Carter, 50 at his Wisroc residence murdered his common-law wife, Leolyn Sullivan and stabbed his step-daughter Shemeka about her body.

It was reported that Carter stabbed Sullivan about 15 times and then slit his own throat in a suicide attempt. Carter however claims that he was stabbed by Sullivan who attacked him first.
