City Council extends amnesty period

THE Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown (M&CC) have announced that the amnesty on the interest on rates has been extended to December 16, 2016.

According to M&CC Public Relations Officer Ms. Debra Lewis, the decision to grant an extension is due to the overwhelming response from rate payers and a request from some for a further grace period.

Lewis said some citizens claim that the initial 14-day period was too short a time for them to garner the money needed to settle their accounts.
She said, too, that several property owners have made to the Council special petitions for consideration, showing why they were unable to access the facility during the specified time. One of the issues highlighted is the transfer of ownership of property.

Lewis said the Council is well aware that many property owners are making every effort to put their obligations in order, and the council, as such, is willing to accommodate their requests at this time.

The Council has declared amnesty on interest accrued on property rates from November 15 to 30, 2016.

Lewis said the response, so far, from the residential property owners has been encouraging.
