A LADEN sand truck and a minibus were involved in a smash-up at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Saturday at about 8:10hrs; and two passengers in the smashed route 42 minibus — identified as 34-year-old Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rank Travis Pollard of

Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara (WCD) and 50-year-old Shelly Thompson of Timheri, East Bank Demerara (EBD) -– sustained serious injuries. Thompson’s right leg has had to be amputated during surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The accident reportedly occurred when route 42 minibus BTT 8079, heading in a northerly direction on the East Bank roadway, became sandwiched between sand truck GVV 6306 and another minibus that had stopped to offload passengers in the vicinity of a restaurant on the Herstelling public road. According to police information, BTT 8079 tried to squeeze its way between the truck and the stationary bus when it clipped the truck, resulting in its driver losing control and crashing the bus into a utility pole. The truck then slammed into this bus.

Minibus driver Davindra Raghu, 24, of Sarah Johanna, EBD, received minor injuries and was taken into police custody; while sand truck driver Lakeram Seemangal has also been detained by police to assist with investigations.
