DIRECTOR of Sport, Christopher Jones, last Tuesday made a stop at the Victoria Community Centre where he handed over a number of Sports equipment and gear to members of the community. In making the presentation, the head of the National Sports Commission declared that it was a small contribution and promised more in the future.
“I want to assure you, here (and)now, that this here is what I consider very minor, a very minute donation…so you can rest assured that the National Sports Commission (NSC) and by extension the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture will make further contributions to the development of your Village through the year.
I understand that there is a proposal to enhance your ground to the tune of $3.5m GY…I want to say this now, that once that proposal is submitted to me,that would be on the priority list for 2017”, Jones promised to loud cheers from the villagers gathered.
“Our aim at the NSC is to do everything possible to ensure that every village throughout the length and breadth of this country, the young people have a recreational space that they can go run, frolic, learn a particular sport and of course have an enclosed environment that is safe;so we are working on ensuring that these facilities are available in every community and village. Be assured that support will always be forthcoming from the NSC in the development of your community,” the Director reminded.
Junior Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Karen Cummings, who hails from that village thanked the Director for the kind gesture and urged the members to “care the equipment and make good use so that Victoria can move from one level to the next…think big,the sky is the limit.”
Long-standing Club official of the Community’s pride – Victoria Kings FC – Calvin Marks introduced the Director and told the gathering that it was a historic moment for the village as it is the first time any Government official came to present any sport equipment to the village and that he was thankful.
Marks also mentioned the exploits of the Victoria Kings FC and reminded that without the support of the Community there would be no Victoria Kings.
The equipment received were for: Cricket, Lawn Tennis, Basketball, Football, Volleyball and Chess. (Ras Wadada)
