POLICE have recovered an AK 47 rifle, two magazines and 15 rounds of matching ammunition along with 15 .38 live rounds; 39, 9mm live rounds and 21, .223 live rounds and a magazine in a house in ‘E’ Division (Linden/Kwakwani).According to a police release, the discovery was made by a 42-year-old citizen who was doing “house cleaning” and stumbled upon a haversack behind a wardrobe.
During an examination of the haversack, the firearm and ammunition were found.
The man went to the police station and made a report and soon after a team of police responded and took possession of the cache.
The policed release noted that the house is owned by persons residing overseas and persons were renting same prior to the discovery.
Earlier this month, a Chinese restaurant in Port Mourant, Corentyne, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) was robbed by bandits carrying an AK-47 assault rifle.
Sangeeta Lall, who worked at the Lai Li Chinese Restaurant, said the men took her cellular phone and money from the restaurant before leaving. One eyewitness related that two men entered the restaurant carrying a gun.
Other reports indicate that it was an AK-47 and one shot was fired.
In July, Custom Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) ranks conducted a search and seizure raid on a business in Canal Number 2, West Bank Demerara where they found a large amount of AK-47 compatible ammunition.
