CITING injustice and non-cooperation, the Guyana Market Vendors’ Union (GMVU) is calling for the removal of City Mayor, Patricia Chase-Green and Town Clerk, Royston King. The Union made its position known yesterday during a picketing exercise outside City Hall indicating that it has had enough, and is calling for the removal of the two parties at reference so as to pave the way for better cooperation between itself and officials of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC).
GMVU President, Eon Andrews told members of the media, “For too long vendors have been lacking the respect they deserve as commercial operators,” and that the last straw was “the empty promises” made by the Mayor and Town Clerk.
One of the “empty promises” at reference is the commitment by the M&CC to building a more modern market facility for vending.
“A structure was presented to the city to be built in place of the Stabroek Market wharf, and now we are not hearing anything about it,” Andrews said, adding:
“Unless the leaders at City Hall are removed, then there will be nothing that will change, because they have no vision.”
Meanwhile, one of the vendors lamented that she has been bullied and barred from plying her trade. “Every time I go out to sell my bread,” she said, “it is taken away by the City Constabulary. And I don’t know why, because I have been doing this for years.”
Other vendors who were a part of the picketing exercise complained about having to face similar treatment, and called for justice to be served.
