4 yrs jail, $16.8M fine for drugs

 

TROY VAN Doimen has been fined GYD$16.8 million and sentenced to four years in prison, after pleading guilty to possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan on Monday.

The allegation stated that 46-year-old, Van Doimen on October 22, at Fifth Avenue Bartica had in his possession 14.61 kilogrammes of marijuana.

When his turn came to plead to the charge, the accused stated, “Your worship I don’t want to waste the court’s time. I am pleading guilty. I never had any trouble with the law, and I’m pleading for a minimum.”

The prosecutor facts stated that on the day in question, police acting on information went to Van Doimen’s home. A search was conducted in his presence, where police found bags containing leaves, seeds and stems under a chair.

He was told of the offense and cautioned. He then admitted to ownership of the drugs.

The court heard that ranks took possession of the narcotics, arrested the defendant and took him to the Bartica Police Station.

When he was given the chance to address the court, Van Doimen said, “I’m asking please for a minimum because I have to take care of my three children.”

Magistrate McLennan asked Van Doimen how he got the marijuana. He replied that someone brought it and left it with him.
