An 18-year-old West Berbice lad, sharing space with equipment in the rear of a moving lorry, died when the equipment which was apparently not secured, knocked him off the vehicle.

Travel Blair of 118 Ithaca West Bank Berbice was pronounced dead on arrival at the Fort Wellington Hospital minutes after the accident occurred on the #5 Village Public Road West Coast Berbice around 21:45h Sunday.

This newspaper understands that the young man was among a team of youths who accompanied the music set ‘Thunderbolt’ to play music at the horse race meeting at Rising Sun, West Coast of Berbice, earlier on Sunday.

The assignment was completed and the youth was among others in the rear of the lorry taking the equipment back to Ithaca, when a pallet where one of the speakers rested, suddenly moved from its position.

The speaker then slammed into Blair and another young man, however the other person managed to hold on to the rails of the lorry but Blair was unfortunate.

“He get hit out the tray.. The driver didn’t realize what was happening. He continued driving. I had to bang on the side of the vehicle; shout for him to stop and then he stopped. I run back and see Travel lying down alongside the road unconscious and bleeding heavy,” the youth said.

He said the equipment was not properly secured and the sudden shift may have been caused by a gust of wind since the lorry did collide with any other vehicle or made any sudden movements.

Blair leaves to mourn his parents and two siblings. The driver of the lorry is assisting police with the investigation.
