The eGovernment Agency which comes under the aegis of the Ministry of Public Telecommunications (MoPT) is moving quickly to complete the distribution of laptop computers to teachers across the country.

The distribution teams are sticking to the specific parameters established by the Ministry of Education (MoE), a release from the Ministry of Public Telecommunications noted.

To date, the teams have handed out 2,415 computers to trained and in-training teachers in Georgetown and Region 5 who have met the MoE’s criteria.  On October 25 and 26, the team will travel to Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) to distribute 618 laptops.  On the following day, another team will be in Region 1 to distribute computers to teachers at Santa Rosa and Moruca.

The distribution schedule was designed by the Ministry of Education even before the roll-out began on the day after the One Laptop per Teacher (OLPT) initiative was launched by President David Granger at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) campus, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara on October 05.

According to the release, this OLPT initiative is driven by President Granger’s principled position that the government must provide modern research and learning tools to ensure that our children, youths and young professionals receive the most rounded education possible.  Another key objective is to quickly raise the level of digital literacy country-wide.

The MoPT will continue to keep teachers and the public updated on the progress of distribution.  In the meantime, teachers may direct their enquiries to the Ministry of Education or to Regional Education Officers.
