-while shattered backboard postpones male game

DESPITE their intensity and tenacity, the Guyana female basketball team lost their second game in the best-of-three series against Suriname as the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) continued yesterday. Guyana had a strong showing in the game, being able to trade blows but fatigue and foul trouble saw the home side losing in the final quarter of the game.
The first quarter saw Guyana starting the game with energy and jumping to a quick 7-6 lead behind Jada Mohan’s hot start. It was good ball movement and good shot selection which also contributed to the hot start. However,as the quarter went on Suriname weathered the storm and surged back to finish the quarter with a 4-point lead with the scores reading 11-15.

The second quarter saw both teams struggling to score against the opposing team’s defense. It was a quarter filled with turnovers on both side.
For Guyana,Jada Mohan’s foul trouble kept her on the bench as she already had three fouls in the first half. It was Makeda Rogers and Kennesha Leacock who contributed to the offence in this quarter. However,Guyana still trailed 19-24 at the half.
The second half saw Guyana resuming the fight to even up the series, but could not overcome the lead that Suriname kept building. More foul trouble woes for Guyana saw them lose Demelza Nicholas who fouled out.
Two bright spots in the offence were Tandika Bouyea and Ruth Sanmoogan, who came off the bench to give a boost to the scoring, while the latter added a defensive presence. Leacock and Mohan continued their play but failed to convert on attempts and Suriname finished the game off.
For Guyana, Leacock finished with 13 points, with Mohan scoring 11 and Bouyea adding 6. On the Surinamese side, almost every player scored, with Joleen Nyman topscoring with 14 points.
In the male encounter, a much anticipated match-up was cut short before it could begin as Surinamese player Donyell Samson shattered the backboard in warm-up in a failed dunk attempt. The decision was then made between the two teams to play the match this morning at 10:00hrs. This means that Guyana will fight for game two and if they win would have to play a deciding third game ..
The cause of the shattered backboard is suspected to be the ring being too tight, causing the shattering of the glass. The change in schedule also means Table Tennis will be played at the Gymnasium at 10:00hrs.
