AS Bartica continues to face more power outages, the Mayor and Town Council is calling on residents to be patient as it lobbies central Government for a permanent solution to this age-old problem. This week, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) informed the Council that the town will experience further power outages in order to carry out maintenance work on the three generators.
This announcement by GPL caught the council by surprise, according to the Mayor Gifford Marshall. On Thursday, Marshall told the Guyana Chronicle that the Council is totally unhappy with the situation, but will continue to work with GPL and central Government to have a permanent solution in place within the shortest possible time.
“Unfortunately the generators that we have are not in best conditions, but we have gotten the assurances from central Government that those generators will be replaced,” the mayor said.
In light of the situation, he is calling on residents not to lose hope, emphasising that central Government from all indications will make good on its promise to the people of Bartica.
“Since taking office, just about six months ago we would have had a crisis with our waste management; we lobbied central Government and they gave us the funds to correct that. Roads were in a deplorable state, we lobbied central Government, and we were able to get funds. Our playfields were literally pastures, we lobbied central Government and we got funds for that. The entire drainage system collapsed…and we lobbied central Government and we got funds for that, so our point is although we have the power challenges on our hands and we are quite confident that central Government will solve it,” said a confident Marshall.
The mayor said the Council is cognizant of the fact that the business community is losing millions as a result of the power outages, and residents and essential services are severely affected, but again asked that they do not lose hope.
“All we are asking is for the residents to understand that as a Town Council we are making representation, and we are confident that this problem will be solved,” he said, while calling on residents to “trust” in their “leadership.”
“Are we pleased with their (GPL) performance, definitely NO! But we are working with central Government to ensure that all of our concerns are addressed,” the mayor emphasised.
