TAMIM Iqbal’s century set Bangladesh on their way to a resounding 141-run victory over Afghanistan in the final one-day international to seal the series 2-1.The previous two encounters had been closely-matched affairs, Bangladesh winning the first by seven runs before the tourists squeezed home by two wickets with two balls to spare last time out.
But this decider in Mirpur was anything but, Tamim’s seventh ODI hundred providing the foundation for Bangladesh’s 279-8, before left-arm spinner Mosharraf Hossain – whose last international appearance came eight years ago – took 3-24 as Afghanistan crumbled to 138 all out.
Afghanistan captain Asghar Stanikzai dropped Tamim when he was on one, and the batsman made him pay heavily.
His 118 came at exactly a run a ball, including 11 fours and two maximums as he enjoyed a second-wicket stand worth 140 with Sabbir Rahman (65).
Those two scores were the only ones of note in the Bangladesh innings as Afghanistan fought back well in the final 20 overs, Rashid Khan returning a tidy 2-39 from his 10 overs.
Although Bangladesh may feel they should have gone beyond 300, their total proved to be more than enough as Afghanistan collapsed.
Only Rahmat Shah (36) and Nawroz Mangal (33) offered any real resistance, Mosharraf making up for lost time as the hosts cruised to a 100th ODI win and a series victory.
