Dead is 58-year-old Bibi Ameroon Hussein O’Donovan of 15 Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice. She was a Guyanese with British citizenship. Her daughter, 23-year-old Sheneeza Lewis, was injured. Lewis, also a British citizen, initially received treatment at the Mahaicony Hospital but was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Reports disclose that the car being used by the mother and daughter, HC 6753, was heading to the airport for a 05:00h check-in when it slammed into the rear of a truck, GHH 7197, in the vicinity of the Mahaica Bridge.

The truck was transporting bags of rice at the time. The driver of the car, who police said was speeding, is in custody assisting with investigations. The mother and daughter had been on a six-week vacation in Guyana.

The father of the injured girl, Daniel Lewis, told this publication he visited his daughter Tuesday evening, but he is separated from the mother.

“My daughter and her mother live in London and they were heading to the airport when I got the message. A friend with a lorry came and picked me up and brought me to the scene at Mahaica Bridge.

“I was told that the car slammed into the back of the truck and my daughter’s mother lost her life and she was injured,” Mr Lewis stated.
