MEMBERS of Dolphin Swim Club chosen to represent Guyana at the XXII Goodwill Games in St. Lucia from August 19-21 were given small donations by the club to assist with their budget for the games.
The donations were given at a small presentation ceremony before the club members did their workouts last Saturday at the Colgrain Swim Pool.
The games are self-sponsored, meaning that competitors are expected to cover their own expenses. Currently, the Dolphin contingent at the games is made up of seven swimmers: Kenita Mahaica, Lajuan Munroe, Jeremy Sookram, Jeron Sookram, Sekhel Tzedeq ,Patrice Mahaica and Paul Mahaica.
Of the seven (7) athletes, two are still awaiting sponsorship for the games. Also receiving a donation was Jamila Sanmoogan who would be representing Guyana at the Rio Olympics. Sanmoogan, in addition to receiving the donation, gave a small pep-talk to the swimmers of the club expected to go to St. Lucia, as well as the other club members.
“Swimming is hard work, but if you’re dedicated and work towards it, you too can get to the point that I am at” the 19 year old said.
The swimmer also gave homage to the swim club, which she credited as the root of her swimming. The Goodwill athletes are expected to cop a few medals in addition to improving their times.
