Moruca Expo on next weekend

FOR the first time in its 12-year history, a Gospel Fest will feature among a variety of events in this year’s Jubilee edition of the annual Moruca Expo which will culminate with the much-anticipated Miss Moruca Pageant next Saturday night.

The exposition will run from July 28-30, the organizing committee stated.
The Gospel Fest, which will see participation of a number of churches within the region, is slated for July 28. On July 29, monetary prizes will be up for grabs when teams within the North West District clash at the recreational ground at Kumaka , Santa Rosa . A calypso competition will mix with the football action that day.
The main day of events is next Saturday. The events on the cards for that day will commence at 05:30 hrs with a road run through the communities there. Aquatics would then follow and the list of events includes swimming, canoeing and boat tug-o-war.
“Since it is the start of the crab season, patrons can expect a crab fest as well”, the committee said.
On the main day, traditional games in the form of archery, slingshot, crab quake making, crab-catching, h’achi pot eating, piwari drinking would follow at the Kumaka Recreation Ground.
In the evening, the Miss Moruca Pageant would plug the expo with six delegates vying for the crown. The delegates hail from Manawarin, Waramuri, Santa Rosa, Assakata, Warapoka, Santa Cruz, Kariako and Kwebanna.
This publication was in Moruca last weekend and had an opportunity to chat with the reigning Miss Moruca , Amanda Daniels, as well as the delegates who will compete in the pageant on Saturday evening.
The ladies were going through their paces at the community centre at Kumaka. Daniels, who is part of the pageant committee, said that the event includes seven segments, including an introductory dance by the delegates, introduction of the delegates, a talent piece, traditional wear, beach wear, evening wear and an intelligence segment. The delegate who gains the most points will be crowned Miss Moruca 2016.
Those competing are Nikita Fredericks (Miss Manawarin), Margot Lucas (Miss Santa Rosa), Rehana Joseph (Miss Kariako) ,Tracy Thomas (Miss Assakata) , Indrecin Hackett ( Miss (Kwebanna ) and Rose Brescino (Miss Santa Cruz).
According to Daniels, the pageant presents an opportunity for the people of the area to showcase their cultural capabilities among other talents. ”It shows we have a lot of talent and we can produce good people who can go far in life and become a great leader someday”, she said.
The Kumaka Guest House is fully booked, while relatives and friends are currently making accommodation arrangements with their folk at Moruca as the event nears.
