Digicel kicks off senior Squash Championships

THE Guyana Squash Association (GSA) in collaboration with its corporate sponsor Digicel on Wednesday evening kicked off its 2016 Digicel Senior National Squash Championships at the Georgetown Club Inc. courts. Play opened on Day 1 with three matches in the Veterans category.
Javed Alli easily defeated Douglas De Groot 11-2, 11-7, 11-0 while Joe Mekdeci had a comfortable victory in his matchup with Robin Low, winning 11-1, 11-3, 11-4.
In the final contest of the evening Garfield Wiltshire beat Medhi Ramdhani 11-4, 12-10, 11-6.
Meanwhile last evening’s matches featured the round-of-16 for the men and quarter-final matches for the women.
In action will be several of the country’s leading squash players including No.1 seed Alex Arjoon, defending champion Nyron Joseph, Jason Ray Khalil, Kristian Jeffrey, Regan Pollard, Ben Mekdeci and Raphael De Groot in the men’s division.
On the distaff end, No.1 seed Ashley Khalil, Akeila Wiltshire, Larissa Wiltshire, Taylor Fernandes and Victoria Arjoon will comprise the women’s division.
Matches commence at 18:00hrs daily with the finals set for Sunday July 3 from 11:00hrs
