Departmental charges for Berbice cop accused of rape

DEPARTMENTAL charges have been recommended against Berbice detective Terrence Paul who was accused of rape by a female police corporal. The Guyana Chronicle understands that the file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and departmental charges have been recommended. The file will also have to be reviewed by the Police Service Commission (PSC).
There is a procedure which is standard in the Police Force when an allegation is made against a police officer. It is guided by the laws under the Police Service Commission Discipline Act 17:01.
The Act states that “Where the power to exercise disciplinary control over persons holding offices in the Police Force (including the power to remove such persons from office) has been exercised under article 212 of the constitution by the disciplinary authority, any such person in respect of whom that power has been exercised may appeal from the decision of the disciplinary authority to the commission.”
