A SENTINEL Security Guard narrowly escaped death last Monday when he was struck from behind by a motorcar in Albouystown and flung into a trench. The victim, Orville Valentine, 48, is now warded at the Georgetown Public Hospital with three fractures to his left leg and more to his left arm and ribs.

When the Guyana Chronicle paid him a visit at the hospital yesterday, Valentine, whose condition is listed as serious, was in cast and still on oxygen, and could not give an account of the accident.

However, his sister, Debra, said it happened around noon, and that her brother, an armoured guard with Sentinel, had just finished working and was heading home.

She said he was walking in the corner of the road when the car slammed into him.

She said someone who witnessed the accident immediately telephoned her and other relatives, while other persons assisted in getting him to the hospital.

The vehicle was identified as bearing a DIGICEL Logo, and relatives said that the company has since admitted liability.

Valentine, who seems to be taking on his condition, said that he has been an employee of the guard service (formerly COPS) for more than five years, has a good record and cannot come to terms with sustaining debilitating injuries and being unable to work.

He is expected to be taken to theatre today for corrective surgery.
