IN what was deemed as chaotic and frightful, several persons were left injured early yesterday morning when bandits invaded the Hotel Ramada Casino, Providence, East Bank Demerara.“It was pure confusion, with blood and ransacked gaming areas, frightened persons and a whole load of other chaotic scenes,” a female employee, who did not want her name published, told the Guyana Chronicle.
Persons screamed, ducked and hid, the employee stated.
She said that prior to that, around 03:20 hrs, the place was silent, when suddenly someone ran into a section of the Casino and yelled “Gun! Gun! Y’all run and hide!”
The anxiety grew, as four armed men began to order patrons, employees and even security guards to get on the floor.
The employee said that the bandits opened fire loosely, hitting at least five persons.
“They were walking all over the place, hitting persons and doing all sorts of other unpleasant things,” the employee, who managed to remain hidden and watched everything unfold, told this newspaper.
According to a release from the police, four of the five persons who were injured are employees Eon Garraway, James Gregory, Orlando Knights and Udairan Sookraj, who received injuries to their left hand, left foot, left hand and right hand, respectively. They have been admitted to hospital.
Three patrons, Melissa Ferguson, Jermaine Mason and Roshel Fraser were also assaulted by the men during the incident.
It was reported that a security guard was held hostage as the bandits made their way to the cashier, where they took away an unknown sum of foreign and local currencies. The Guyana Chronicle understands that persons who were present were also relieved of their belongings during the ordeal.
The police were called in,responded promptly and a gun battle ensued once the men were out of the facility.
The police release indicated that police ranks responded to a report and confronted the perpetrators at the hotel where there was an exchange of gunfire which resulted in police Lance Corporal Andrew Richardson of Impact Base, Brickdam, being shot to his abdomen. He has been admitted to hospital.
So far, according to reports, one of the gunmen was caught, and arrested, and a firearm that was taken away from the security guard was recovered. His three accomplices managed to escape. Investigations are in progress.
