Driver accused of assaulting cop

A BUS DRIVER appeared before City Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday charged with unlawful assault of a police traffic officer.Terrence Park, of Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge as it was read to him.

It was alleged that on Friday, April 8 at Commerce Street, Lacytown, Georgetown, Park unlawfully assaulted Police Constable Critchlow, who was stationed at the Brickdam Police Station Traffic Department.

Police also claimed that on the same day, he resisted arrest by Critchlow.

According to the charge, Park – a driver of a route 44 minibus – was caught allegedly soliciting passengers on the bus park. When the traffic rank approached and tried to arrest him, Park resisted and held onto the officer’s waist in attempt to fight him off. A large crowd gathered to witness the brawl. The officer called for backup and was able to restrain his attacker.

The defendant was granted $10,000 bail and ordered to return to court on May 9 for the commencement of trial.
