WHEN employees of the Meten-Meer-Zorg (MMZ) Post Office, West Coast Demerara, showed up for work on Friday morning, they got quite a shock when they saw that the place had been broken into and robbed.Deputy Post Master General of the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC), Abdul Hassan, told the Guyana Chronicle that the back door, which is on the ground floor of the building, was forced open by robbers.

He said employees were sure they had secured the place before leaving on Thursday afternoon.

Hassan added that the bandits had managed to access the inner office, which houses the safe in which money is stored. Officials told this newspaper that some money was missing from the safe, but could not say how much, since the investigation was still active.

Hassan said the missing money was for general post office transactions. This newspaper understands that several pensioners turned up at the post office on Friday, and were waiting to collect their pensions, but payment was delayed because of the theft. Some pensioners learnt that the place was broken into only after they arrived at the location.

The Guyana Chronicle understands that the theft was the work of a group of men who had ample time to get inside the building and cart off the money.

Meanwhile, as they waited for the post office to resume business, several members of the Stewartville Seventh-Day Adventist Church saw it fitting to distribute meals of hot vegetable soup to the elderly.

One of the many recipients of the meal, Savitri Ramsundar, told the newspaper that she was pleased to have something to eat while she waited. The MMZ Post Office has been outfitted with a shed and seating accommodation for pensioners, who previously had to brave the scorching sun while awaiting receipt of their pensions.

The initiative was the brainchild of Police ‘D’ Division Commander Stephen Mansell, who got support from several businessmen. One of the donors, Halim Khan, disclosed that plans were on stream to have ceiling fans installed inside the post office.
