“UNPROFESSIONALISM will at no time be condoned,” Public Health Minister, Dr. George Norton said in his address to the Regional Health Officers and Programme Directors of the Ministry.

At the time, he was delivering remarks at Cara Lodge where a meeting was convened with the senior health officials from across the country. Minister within the Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Karen Cummings; PAHO/WHO Country Representative, Dr. William Adu-Krow; and Director of Regional Health Services, Dr. Kay Shako were also in attendance during the meeting yesterday.

Minister Norton said the delivery of acceptable, accessible, affordable, timely and appropriate healthcare services to the people of Guyana is of great importance but unprofessionalism often stand in the way.

“Too often we see in the media, instances of unprofessionalism in the Public Healthcare System. One time is one time too many… Unprofessionalism will at no time be condoned by the Ministry of Public Health, and necessary measures will be taken in all instances to deal condignly with persons who behave in such a manner,” he stated clearly.

He said healthcare professionals must be equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to deliver quality of health care services the country needs. As such, he encouraged them to continuously pursue medical education.

“I am personally an advocate for continuous higher education and as such, I pledge the Ministry of Public Health’s support in any way possible in your pursuit of continuing medical education. It is in your best interest and the best interest of the Guyanese people to take full advantage of the opportunity presented to engage meaningfully with your regional Counterparts to improve the quality of regional health services.”

He said the Government is fully committed to working towards reaching the sustainable Development Goals which will set the foundation for a new development agenda. Partners such as the Pan-American Health Organisation/World Health Organisation and the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) contribute significantly towards the efforts to improve the quality of healthcare in Guyana as well, he added.
