WHATSAPP WORRIES

A COURT case regarding a domestic dispute became a popular topic due to the all-too-relatable issue we often have in relationships when it comes to Whatsapp and other social media:- one’s relationship status. The public couldn’t help but endlessly discuss the case in which a man assaulted his partner for not changing her Whatsapp display photo to a photo of him.

It wasn’t so much the story that had everyone amused, but the familiarity with the trouble in which too many of us have found ourselves as regards our significant other.

The man wanted to be claimed, and the woman, for some reason or the other, felt that that was not necessary. Many assumed that maybe she was ashamed, or that he was not the only one — reasons that are all too familiar in these cases, I’m sure. Of course, his decision to abuse her was inexcusable, but the events leading up to her battery are a harsh reminder that social media puts a lot of pressure on us in times when we may be seeking to be discreet.

CHILLING COINCIDENCE
The news of the death of a Guyanese man in Queens, who set himself afire, came as more than just a shock to the public, in light of the current spate of suicides that has been rocking Guyana lately.

Many even went so far as to wonder if it’s a “Guyanese thing”, since Guyanese are killing themselves even abroad. That’s a bit harsh, not to mention hasty to assume, I’d say, but the coincidence is indeed chilling. One person even mused whether our Government would have to “set up a strategic plan over there too”. At this point, I suppose we should try anything, if it would work.

ALL THINGS ZIKA
The Zika virus continues to worry the public as more and more materials surface regarding the mysterious disease — from facts people need to know about the virus to doctors questioning whether it’s Zika at all; even a local report about Guyana’s concern about a US CDC advisory regarding travel here, despite only one reported case. All and sundry are grasping at any news possible to inform themselves of the Zika virus. It’s good to know these things, especially in this age of information, where it’s easily accessible. We should remember, as we seek knowledge, that while it is good, an overflow could also be the cause of premature panic.
