Motorbike bandits giving cops headache

By Leroy Smith
POLICE are ready to respond to the trend of illegal activities being committed by persons who traverse the city and its outskirts on motorcycles and bicycles as a chosen means of escape. This was confirmed by ‘A’ Division Commander Clifton Hicken during a recent interview with the media when he noted that data analysis had indicated that several persons have been reporting robberies committed by persons on either motorcycles or bicycles.
Hicken referred to a developing trend where motorcycle bandits have been pouncing on persons early in the morning. According to the ‘A’ Division Commander, persons on motorcycles and bicycles have been riding around and snatching bags and other valuables from persons and riding off into the dark, even dashing through alleyways which allow easy escape.
Additionally, the police have noticed persons on motorcycles at night riding around with neither head nor tail lights and they too have been committing crimes. Recent news headlines have also highlighted the increasing involvement of so-called ‘CG’ motorcycle bandits in executing daring armed robberies, such as the robbery of the RK’s security vehicle and the ambush of America Street money changers.

Disrespectful
Meanwhile, many citizens have noted the trend of bikers who traverse city streets and environs at high speed and without helmets, including those on superbikes, even disrespectfully ignoring the presence of ranks on duty.

Hicken observed that this new trend is making it difficult for potential eyewitnesses to see the registration plates of the bikes and this makes the work of the police even harder.
In the meantime, the police have commenced countrywide raids and roadblocks which are being held simultaneously. With respect to ‘A’ Division, Hicken said that members of the public could expect ranks from his division with support from force headquarters moving into communities in convoys to conduct raids and searches but he assured that most of the operations would be intelligence-led.

Security Around Banks
Divisional Detective Reshi Dass said that the heightened security posture around the banks is already in place and the police will not be giving those with criminal intent any slack in this regard.
Dass warned , however, that they need to be more security conscious if they wish not to become direct targets of criminals. He also spoke specifically to the security issue of persons walking around with large sums of cash.
Deputy Commander, Senior Superintendent Ian Amsterdam said that the police force never loses a battle with the criminals and this period will be no different. He said that the criminals are just a small number of persons who are inconveniencing the majority and that will be stamped out.
“We have never failed to discharge our mandate as a police force and never threw our arms up and surrender to criminals and we will not do that at this time,” Amsterdam assured.
He made reference to President Granger’s position not to involve the army in the domestic security arrangement in the country. According to Amsterdam that speaks of the confidence the Commander-in-Chief has in the police force’s ability to handle the situation.
On the other hand Hicken has called on persons to desist from conflicts as that could lead to violent confrontations, including murders. Hicken also told reporters that his division was recently disturbed over the two domestic violence deaths which took place earlier this week.
