Man tossed away ‘joint’ at Potaro Junction – out of respect for lawmen, court hears

LESTER Gibson, 49, was yesterday refused bail by City Magistrate Ann McLennan on a charge of trafficking in narcotics at Potaro Junction.
Gibson, of Lot 3233 South Ruimveldt, Georgetown denied the drug trafficking charge read to him.Particulars of the charge said that on Thursday at Potaro Junction, the defendant was seen in the area and after he recognised that the policemen patrolling the area were approaching him, he threw away a black plastic bag and began to run away.

The officers, however, were able to apprehend him and the bag he had in his possession was allegedly found to contain what was suspected to be marijuana.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones opposed bail, citing the nature and gravity of the charge.

The unrepresented defendant told the court that he was ‘burning a joint’ and in showing respect for the lawmen he threw it away and ran off. He said also that the officer found the bag under a house and because he ran when he saw them they are claiming that the bag belonged to him.

The matter was adjourned to 21st October and transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
