Teenager gets 12 months jail for stealing phone

EIGHTEEN-year-old Glenford Hart was yesterday jailed for 12 months by city magistrate Judy Latchman after he was found guilty on a break-and-enter-and-larceny charge which detailed that,
between Thursday July 9, and Friday July 10, at North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Charlotte Elliot and stole one Samsung tablet valued at $100,000.The unrepresented mason pleaded not guilty to the charge on his first court appearance, but had been denied pretrial liberty.

The matter was prosecuted by Police Inspector Vishnu Hunt, and the teenager, who had no prior convictions, was informed by the magistrate in her ruling that the court disbelieved his evidence when he said that he did not steal anything.
The court, however, acted on the evidence of Charlotte Elliot, which was found to be safe and reliable.

After sentencing the convict, Magistrate Latchman warned him not to commit this type of offence again, quoting one of the commandments, “Thou shall not steal”. (Geeta Rampersaud)
