Record overseas participation for Guyana Softball Cup

THE Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) has announced that 26 teams, 11 of which are North American, will compete in the 5th edition of the Guyana Softball Cup set for October 30 to November 1.During the launch yesterday, it was announced that New York All Stars (NYSCL), USA Mercenary, Dant XI Canada, New York Legends (NYSCL), New York Better Hope, Tri State Masters (Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx), Brooklyn/Queens Legends, OMSCC Canada, Orlando Florida and SCI Miami are the confirmed teams for the 2015 edition of the tournament.
Guyana’s teams feature 2011 winners Cotton Field Wild Oats and Invaders Masters (Essequibo) while Berbice will have the Karibee Boys and Corriverton.
The Demerara teams are Regal, Wolf Warriors, Regal Masters, Farx Xi, Zameer Xi, Princess Hotel, Savage, Industry Superkings, Floodlights, Floodlights Legends and Parika Defenders.
Twelve teams will play in the open division for a first prize of $800 000 and a trophy while the runners-up in this division will cart off $200 000 and a trophy.
In the Masters division, the remaining 14 teams (persons 45 years and over) will compete for $600 000 and a trophy while the runners-up will take away $150 000.
In both categories, the man-of-the-match in the final will take home a trophy while the player-of-the-series will take one gold and diamond studded softball band.
The tournament will feature the preliminary rounds at GCC, DCC, Police (Eve Leary), Malteenoes, Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO), GNIC, Ogle, Enmore and the Gandhi Youth Organisation while the finals will take place at DCC.
Vice-president of the GFSCA Jailall Deodass said, “Cricket (softball) has grown from year to year, and this our 5th year we have attracted more than 20 teams in all. Cricket will be played at the highest level of competition.”
Another vice-president, Rickey Deonarine, indicated that the tournament will feature a total of 48 games over the three-day period.
Representing the National Sport Commission (NSC), Administrative Officer Gervy Harry commended the association for the sustainability of the tournament, adding that, “It (the tournament) has to be something of quality; it has to be motivating for persons (sponsors) to want to stay with you.”
He challenged the organisers in the future to focus their energies on a children’s tournament for primary schools.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Ansa McAl Darshanie Yussuf as well as the representative for Clear Waters, Atiesha Isaacs, both expressed pleasure in having their companies on board.
