AN Alberttown motorist who was stopped by police to undergo a breathalyser test ended up facing charges yesterday for being in possession of an unlicensed .38 revolver and a quantity of various calibres of ammunition.Daren John, 23, of Lot 141 First Street, Alberttown was remanded to prison by city Magistrate Ann McLennan after it was alleged that on September 28 at Brickdam Police Station, he had in his possession a .38 revolver with six matching rounds, four 9mm rounds and two .32 rounds without being the holder of a firearm licence. The father of one denied the charge.
According to Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones, the motorist was stopped by traffic ranks on Thomas Street, Georgetown to conduct a breathalyser test when an officer felt an object at the defendant’s waist.
The court heard that John ran back to his car to escape from the lawmen after they became suspicious. However he was later intercepted by ranks on patrol after the traffic ranks radioed for backup. He was taken to the Brickdam Police Station and the illegal gun and ammunition were discovered in his car.
Corporal Jones objected to bail, citing the grave nature of the charges. Bail was refused and the defendant is scheduled to make his next court appearance on October 12.
