THE book ‘Sir Arthur Lewis, Nobel Laureate: A Biographical Profile,’ written by Guyanese author Robert Lalljie, was officially launched in Guyana last Monday evening at Castellani House. The book, which chronicles the life and work of famous St Lucian economist Sir Arthur Lewis who died in 1991, was first published in 1996, but was never before launched. Present for the book launch were a number of supporters, including Guyanese economist Dr. Clive Thomas, as well as literature and arts enthusiast Ameena Gafoor.
“The book gives you an opportunity to delve into the rich past of an illustrious economist,” Lalljie said, as he delivered remarks at the event.
Lewis’s policies and his philosophy of seeing education and not money as the key to ending poverty was notably highlighted by the many persons who spoke on his life and work during the launch.
Sir Arthur Lewis, a renowned economist who studied at the London School of Economics, worked at several universities, including Princeton in the USA.
In 1970, Lewis was selected as the first president of the Caribbean Development Bank. Lewis received the Nobel prize in Economics in 1979, sharing it with Theodore Schultz. He was also Vice-Chancellor at the University of Guyana.
Following the conclusion of the speeches, the author and Dr. Thomas entertained a question-and-answer segment with members of the audience.
