Vagrant pleads guilty to stabbing bus driver – jailed for 18 months

CHRISTOPHER Mohanie who stabbed a bus driver during an altercation appeared on Thursday before city magistrate Faith McGusty and pleaded guilty to the charge that, on September 14 at Stabroek Market, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Mahase Budram.The vagrant explained to the court that, on the day in question, he was smoking cocaine when Budram approach and started to provoke him. “So I pick up a bottle and stab he up, cause everybody know is crack cocaine I does smoke,” Mohanie pointed out.

Given a chance to state his version of the altercation, the victim, who was in court, said he drives a route 42 minibus, and had just arrived on the park and was in the minibus line awaiting passengers when his attacker braced his bus smoking the cocaine substance.

“I couldn’t tek the scent of the ting he been smoking, so I tell he fuh move, and I push he away,” the victim told the court.

Mohanie subsequently retuned with a broken bottle and dealt the unsuspecting driver several stabs about his body, which caused him to receive 28 stitches.

On ground that he hadn’t wasted the court’s time but had admitted to the offence, the vagrant was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment. (Clestine Juan)
