Sydroy Nedd 7-a-side Memorial football kicks off today

THE Sydroy Nedd 7-a-side Memorial football tournament will kick-off today at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground, West Coast Demerara with eight matches, beginning at 14:00hrs.

Nedd, a former president of the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) and the Uitvlugt FC died four years ago after a brief illness.
He was also Office Manager of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and Assistant Coordinator of the Mayor’s Cup Organising Committee.
In remembering Nedd’s unwavering contribution to the sport of football domestically and nationally, his immediate family, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Cup organising committee, will honour his passing in 2011 with the specially organised 7-a-side inter-ward/village competition.
Over $200 000 in cash prizes as well as trophies will be up for grabs with the winning team receiving $100 000. The second-, third- and fourth-place teams will earn $50 000, $30 000 and $20 000 respectively. All four teams will receive trophies also.
All matches in the two-day tournament will be played at the Den Amstel ground with today’s opening game bringing together Tuschen and Grove from 14:00hrs.
Sara Lodge tackle Agricola from 14:30hrs, Goed Fortuin face Mocha from 15:00hrs; Stewartville come up against Sophia at 15:30hrs; Crane oppose Wales at 16:00hrs; Pouderoyen meet De Kinderen from 16:30hrs, Uitvlugt clash with Bagotville at 17:00hrs and home team Den Amstel take on Kuru Kururu in the last game from 17:30hrs.
The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be played on Thursday at the same venue with the first game starting at 14:00hrs.
Some of the rules of the competition are: Teams will consist of seven members; the number of substitutions in a match is three; the duration of a match is 20 minutes divided into two equal parts (10 minutes each) with half-time intervals not exceeding five minutes; if at the end of full time the score is tied, the sudden-death penalty kicks shall be taken; the off-side offence will not be implemented; teams must be properly attired and the tournament will be played on a knock-out basis.
