FORMER World Boxing Association (WBA) junior welterweight champion `Vicious’ Vivian Harris is set to climb back into the ring tonight for the first time in 10 months. The ageing Guyanese warrior is scheduled to match gloves with American Prichard Colon, in a welterweight contest set to be shown live on Spike Television.
The eight-round contest would be Harris’s first since he was knocked out by Ramon Alvarez in Mexico in last November. At that time Harris was attempting to capture the International Boxing Federation (IBF) North American junior middleweight title.
Tonight’s bout is being staged at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, Canada. The 37-year-old Guyanese is 15 older than his opponent who is yet to be defeated in 15 fights. Harris was crowned WBA champion in October 2002 following a second-round technical knockout (TKO) of champion Diosbelys Hurtado, in Houston, Texas.
He had three successful defences but was then dethroned by little-known Colombian Carlos Maussa via seventh round knockout in June 2005. The talented Guyanese then secured three victories before unsuccessfully challenging Junior Witter of England for the WBC junior welterweight title.
Thereafter, Vicious’ career plunged into a tailspin with him losing six of the following nine fights over a four-year period. He returned to winners’ row in 2013 and has had a three-fight victory streak before meeting Alvarez.
