BOXERS, who will appear on the Guyana Boxing Board of Control’s (GBBC) `Next Generation Boxing-Giftland Showcase Pro Am card, yesterday signed their respective contracts. The event is scheduled for September 26 at the Giftland Shopping Mall, Pattensen, East Coast Demerara.
From all appearances the night promises to be an action-packed one and will have as the main bout Dexter Gonsalves tackling national welterweight champion Iwan Azore over 12 rounds for the title.
Azore was absent from the signing since he is currently based in Trinidad and Tobago but, according to GBBC president Peter Abdool, Azore will be in Guyana a few days before fight night.
Gonsalves, who is the current junior welterweight champion of Guyana and who has stepped up in weight for the fight against the more experienced Azore, has fought seven professional fights, winning seven of them while drawing two and losing the other.
Yesterday’s signing of the contracts saw debutant Imran Khan almost getting involved in a bare-fisted fight with his opponent David Thomas.
Khan shouted at Thomas who was standing right next to him, “It’s my debut, but I will put you down. My wrist is getting better each day and come fight night I will put you away in the first round.”
Thomas, in reply, told Khan that he (Khan) cannot fit in his (Thomas) shoes, but Khan refused to be intimidated and boasted of his amateur career record of 102 victories and 21 losses.
This, however, did not move Thomas even though he has lost all four of his professional fights to date.
Khan had to be moved from standing next to Thomas. Their lightweight contest is scheduled for four rounds.
The opening bout of the night will see another debutant – Terrence Adams – take on Keeve Allicock over four rounds in a featherweight contest.
Adams said Allicock is his `dog’ but the latter was quick to reply, “I’m your handler and I will teach you a lesson.
To date, Allicock has only fought once since becoming a professional fighter and lost.
The main supporting bout brings together Anson Green and Quincy Gomes in a junior welterweight contest over six rounds.
Green has fought five times as a professional and has won two of those bouts and lost the other three. Gomes has also fought five professional bouts and has won three and lost two.
Prior to the fighters bantering, GBBC president Peter Abdool told the media operatives present that the Pro Am cards over the years is a collaborative effort by the GBBC, the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), the Ministry of Sport and the National Communication Network Inc.
He said to date there have been 30 episodes of Guyana Fight Nights that showcased 202 professional fights and 127 amateur bouts.
Abdool said the careers of boxers such as Simeon Hardy, Elton Dharry, Dexter Marques, Clive Atwell, Edmund De Clou, Mark Austin, Kurt Bess, Dexter Gonsalves, Kwesi Jones, Revlon Lake, Azore and Mandessa Moses and others were built on the Guyana Fight Nights.
Abdool expressed the GBBC’s gratitude to the following corporate sponsors: Banks DIH Limited, COURTS Guyana Inc., Giftland OfficeMax, Ansa McAl, Guyana Oil Company, Hand-in-Hand, GTM, Digicel Guyana Inc., Guyana Beverages Inc., Guyana Tourism Authority, King’s Jewellery World, Massy Industries Guyana Limited, Queen’s Atlantic, Fly Jamaica and Top Brand Distributors for their contribution to the development of the Pro Am cards.
