categories unchallenged.
Forde’s time for the event which started at the Vreed-en-Hoop junction on the West Coast Demerara and concluded at Massy’s head office, Ruimveldt, East Bank Demerara, was 33 minutes 15 seconds (33.15), while Morgan returned 42.08.
After a late start, the athletes jostled one another for a position at the head of the affair, but shortly after, they (athletes) got separated into several packs with the leading pack involving Forde, Cleveland Thomas, Nathaniel Giddings and Tyshon Bentick among others.
The front bunch stuck together for quite a while until they reached Crane where Forde increased the pace and was followed by arch rival Thomas.
Meanwhile, Morgan was doing battle with Andrea Foster who at the time had the lead by approximately 20 metres.
Forde and Thomas kept extending the lead and stuck together, but approaching the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, the Kenyan-trained Forde upped the ante and moved away from Thomas who failed to respond.
Forde, who won the event on four consecutive occasions, went on to seal his fifth victory in the history of the event.
He crossed the finish line some 120 metres ahead of Thomas who clocked 33.58. The third-place finisher in this category was Winston Messenger (34.38)
It was just over nine minutes later when Morgan crossed the finish line, way ahead of Fortune (43.52) who collapsed after the race and had to be assisted by her club mates and other public-spirited citizens. She, however, recovered in time to collect her prize. Finishing third was Alicia Jack (44.33.
Most of the athletes complained about having to run in hot humid conditions and said that took a toll on their performance.
In other results, Matthew McKenzie (35.32) won the junior boys’ division ahead of Odwin Tudor (35.43) and Samuel Lynch (40.43) respectively.
On the distaff side, Shantel Hinds (35.32 won the junior girls’ category ahead of Maria McKenzie and Yulit Charles (50.220 respectively.
Cyrleen Phillips (50.22) was first among the female veterans 40 years and over. Second was Carla Adams.
In the male veterans 56 years and over event Llewellyn Gardner (43.18) continued his dominance of 10K runs by winning ahead of Carlton Stephenson (54.43) and Charles Crosse (55.34).
The masters’ 40 years and over age group was won by Larry Josiah (40.01). Second was Eon Archibald (40.25) and finishing third was Kwame Bright (42.22).
The 10K run also had a 5K fitness walk/jog for fitness enthusiasts and this attracted a number of Massy employees who came to the capital from as far as Berbice and Essequibo along with other enthusiasts and their numbers topped the 100 registrants for the event.
The presentation of prizes to the respective winners was done by Massy Group of Companies executives and managers of the various groups.
