IN efforts to restore Georgetown to its “Garden City” status, the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) launched “The Green City” campaign on Thursday at the M&CC compound.
This initiative is intended to deal with issues that have contributed to degradation of the city over the past years. The M&CC also plans to tackle the problem of the presence of vagrants on the pavements. They are deemed an eyesore to society, and persons vending along the pavements are similarly deemed.
Town Clerk Royston King told this publication of plans to deal with these issues. He said an inter-agency committee has been set up in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Protection to deal with the homeless and vagrants. The M&CC and the ministry have begun to formulate a policy to address this issue.
With respect to vending, King said plans are in the pipeline to properly organise vending and place vendors in designated areas. The Merriman’s Mall is one area identified for the relocation of vendors.
The “Green City” initiative is aimed at cleaning up the city and making it more environmentally friendly as Guyana prepares for its 50th Independence celebrations next year. The efforts of this initiative are geared at cleaning up the city through a combined effort by the residents of Georgetown, managed by the Mayor and City Council through the Town Clerk.
